Measuring Regional Inequality With Used Car Prices

This group project and proof of concept was developed during the Princeton Summer Institute for Computational Social Science in Bamberg 2019 in 4 days. The project aims to use web-craping techniques to retrieve data for used cars sold on ebay Kleinanzeigen (The German equivalent of Craigslist) for selected regions and combine this data with indicators of income and potential economic inequality, as well as data on car theft in the examined regions. We hypothesized that these external factors significantly influence the median price of the vehicles for sale. First results can be found in our group presentation.

The projects code was completely done in R using collaborative coding and version control with GitHub. The GitHub-Repository contains the scraper and the complete code for all steps of our analysis. In addition, my main focus in the project was the compilation of an interactive map as a potential tool for policy advisors and prospective car sellers/buyers:

Due to file size limits the resulting interactive leaflet map cant be hosted on github but can be viewed by downloading and extracting this zip file.

Unfortunately no further analyses was feasible during the 4 day project but may be conducted in the future.

Install Python and Jupyter

Install Anaconda which includes Python 3 and Jupyter notebook.

Otherwise, for advanced users, install Jupyter notebook with pip3 install jupyter.

Create a new blog post as usual

Run the following commands in your Terminal, substituting <MY_WEBSITE_FOLDER> and my-post with the file path to your Academic website folder and a name for your blog post (without spaces), respectively:

cd <MY_WEBSITE_FOLDER>
hugo new  --kind post post/my-post
cd <MY_WEBSITE_FOLDER>/content/post/my-post/

Create or upload a Jupyter notebook

Run the following command to start Jupyter within your new blog post folder. Then create a new Jupyter notebook (New > Python Notebook) or upload a notebook.

jupyter notebook

Convert notebook to Markdown

jupyter nbconvert Untitled.ipynb --to markdown --NbConvertApp.output_files_dir=.

# Copy the contents of Untitled.md and append it to index.md:
cat Untitled.md | tee -a index.md

# Remove the temporary file:
rm Untitled.md

Edit your post metadata

Open index.md in your text editor and edit the title etc. in the front matter according to your preference.

To set a featured image, place an image named featured into your post’s folder.

Analysing the German federal elections TV debate 2013

Scientific analysis, originally written as a term paper for the course “Scientific Programming with R” by Andreas Blätte at the University of Duisburg-Essen in the winter semester ²⁰¹⁷⁄₁₈.

The analysis was done with R Markdown and is completely reproducible using the provided script. All that is required for a successfuly reproducing is downloading the survey data sets from the GESIS website (https://dbk.gesis.org/dbksearch/download.asp?db=E&id=56510) and save them in the dirSPSSFiles folder, since the retrieval of the files requires a personal login and therefore cannot be done automatically from R.

Downloading the HTML version of this document and opening it locally in a browser is recommended.

Non-public governmental plans

During my internship for netzpolitik.org I conducted a data analysis of the current non-public plans of the Federal Government and a text statistical comparison with previous versions.

The results were edited graphically and analyised in context of importance to the weblogs primary topics of internet policy and digitization topics.
